What is Detox

Detox, short for detoxification, is intended to eliminate all signs of drug use from your blood, urine, saliva, or even hair. Considering the potential risk of consuming harmful chemicals, the risk of water intoxication, and the fact that detox products aren't very reliable means you should probably avoid this approach.

Detox, short for detoxification, is intended to eliminate all signs of drug use from your blood, urine, saliva, or even hair. Home remedies for detoxifying your blood and urine include drinking large quantities of lemon water, cranberry juice, coffee, or apple cider vinegar. Mouth wash is commonly recommended for saliva drug tests. Special shampoos are recommended for hair follicle drug tests.

Commercial products come in the form of drinks, pills, and shampoos. These products often only represent to work for a short amount of time (usually about four hours) and force you to follow very specific instructions leading up to the test. This means that, to meet the product requirements, you may have to plan days in advance and know precisely when you'll be taking the test.

Do detox products work?

Reviews from customers of these products are generally poor. Although some customers indicate success, it's likely that enough time had passed that little or no drugs were in their system by the time they took the test (signs of most drugs are gone in a few days). Detox drinks often require consuming massive amounts of fluid, which hints they may actually just be another form of dilution.

Even if there is a chance detox products work, you may not have enough advance notice of your test to be able to prepare or the steps may be too hard to follow. Home remedies and commercial products often require that you start preparing days before the test and that a final additional step is taken within a small window before test time. A co-worker or boss spotting you with a detox product at work probably won't look good either.

Detox risks

Detox drinks likely carry some of the same water intoxication risks that come with dilution. Be aware that anytime you consume 27 ounces of fluid or more per hour, you risk water intoxication. Be sure to review the ingredient list in any pill or drink that you consume, since any chemical designed to rid your body of drugs has a chance of causing other problems.
